March the 20th, 2004 was a very important date in the history of the Lhaovo Christians in Burma. It was the day when they dedicated their first New Testament with Psalms and Proverbs in the presence of about five hundred grateful believers in Bethela Church at Waimaw. Rev. Paul Naw Tawng the formal Genereal Secretary of the Kachin Baptist Convention presented a copy of the New Testament to the representative of the Lhaovo Christians. In fact this was their largest and third celebration.
The first celebration took place on a smaller scale about four years ago. Grateful translators and review committee members of the Lhaovo Sub-committee invited fellow translators and committee members of the Jinghpaw and Lacid Subcommittee under the Kachin Baptist Convention to join with them in thanksgiving to God. During the service a translator presented the prepared manuscripts to the chairperson of the Sub-committee as a sign of completing part of the task assigned to two translators.
The second dedication ceremony took place at Yangon Kachin Baptist Church during the time of the Executive and Board of Management Meetings of the Kachin Baptist Convention in November 2003. At the time there were only a few sample copies of the Lhoavo New Testament with Psalms and Proverbs in the Bible Society of Myanmar. Dr. Chitra Chhetri presented a copy to the General Secretary of the Kachin Baptist Convention on behalf of the Bible Society of Myanmar and the United Bible Societies.
The Lhaovo Christians have been waiting for this day for many decades. For seventy seven years they have listened to and studied the Scriptures in Jinghpaw, Burmese and English. Lhaovo pastors translated the sermon passages on the spot when they preached to the Lhaovo Christians who did not understand any Jinghpaw. In the early 1970s a Lhaovo Catholic Father by the name of Luka Hao (Haung) Lum, reduced the Lhaovo language into writing, using the Latin Script. The writing became popular and was accepted by many educated Lhaovo leaders. In the 80s a group of Lhaovo Christian leaders tried to translate the Bible with the help of an independent missionary family Orville and Hazel Carlson. The translation work went on for a few years and even a few portions of the New Testament were test printed. However, the work did not produce a Bible for the Lhaovo Christians.
In the meantime, in 1989 the Kachin Baptist Convention took an action in its EC meeting to permit a translation of the Bible into Lhaovo.The translation work was conducted under the Literature Department of the Convention. Immediately, the department sought out assistance from the Bible Society of Myanmar and with the Society's technical and financial help, a Lhaovo Translation Project was set up to begin a systematic translation of the Lhaovo Bible. After more than a decade of disciplined persevering work and patient waiting, Lhaovo Christians now have a beautiful Lhaovo New Testament with Psalms and Proverbs to read, to study and to live by its life giving message.
